The use of crumb rubber last year was more than 500 million
pounds in North America. More than half of this amount
was used by the rubber manufacturing industry.
The uses for this material include fillers in rubber
compounds, asphalt modifiers, and extruded products,
to name just
a few. As the quality and supply of crumb rubber become
more reliable, and increasing number of rubber manufacturers
are exploring the possibility of incorporating this material
in their compounds. If the processing method is properly
chosen, the compounder will be able to achieve substantial
savings in material costs. Improved mixing and curing
properties are additional benefits that result from the
use of recycled
materials.
